Adding yet another process to your daily beauty routine may sound like a bore, but products designed to be worn over moisturiser and under foundation can reduce shine and the appearance of fine lines, and help make-up go on smoothly and stay in place. We tested a range of products that promise to prep and prime skin.

Benefit's Porefessional (HK$290/22ml) is a thick balm that reduces oil and the appearance of pores. Dab a small amount over the T-zone or any oily patches. Skin becomes matt and silky, and pores are completely covered. After applying foundation, skin appears even in tone and oil-free. We love the fact that you only need a small amount. Available at all Benefit counters.

The Body Shop's Skin Primer Moisture It (HK$129/25ml) is a creamy foundation base that hydrates skin. The primer dries quickly and doesn't feel heavy or oily, but is detectable under foundation. After application, skin feels moisturised and firm and foundation goes on smoothly. Available at The Body Shop.

Sulwhasoo's Extra Refining Radiance Make-up Base (HK$760/30ml) has a pearly appearance and thick texture. Enhanced with red pine, fruit and seed extracts, the base moisturises and protects skin, which feels firm and smooth after use. Apply a generous amount and rub it in well. Foundation should be used straight away. The pay-off is instantly brighter skin that glows all day. Available at all Sulwhasoo stores and counters.

Laura Mercier Hydrating Foundation Primer (HK$320/50ml) has the texture of a light face lotion. Skin feels soft and plump after use and foundation goes on easily and evenly. The best bit for us, however, is it's almost impossible to tell you're wearing it. Available at Laura Mercier counters at Lane Crawford stores.
