Versace puts it on a plate

VERSACE has taken images of seasonal blossoms, fruit and cascading stars, entwined with holly, baroque candles, cherubs and angels and put them on plates. Using gold leaf liberally, he has called the creation 'Visions of Christmas'.

Each piece is hand-painted, which means no two are the same.

It also means buying one piece as a special gift will not look like you left out the rest of the set. You do not necessarily have to eat off the plates you buy to celebrate Christmas.

Although there is little doubt that a table full of Royal Worcester's Holly Ribbons dinner service or of Tiffany's holiday settings and cutlery is service at its most festive, commemorative plates, such as Wedgwood's Christmas 1994, mark the occasion just as well, especially as a gift to a plate collector.

The large plate costs $600 and the smaller one, $290.

More ornate and slightly more expensive is Royal Crown Derby's elaborate limited edition Christmas plate.

Each one is numbered and only 2,000 were made. The bad news is that those available in Hong Kong are circa 1992; the good news is that they are on a special offer for $804.

Peter Rabbit and Bunnykins vie for children's attention at the table. Merry Christmas from Bunnykins, from Royal Dalton, costs $155.

There is a $200 calendar plate which could make up a set.

Versace's Visions of Christmas is available from Versace Collections boutiques in Ocean Terminal, Pacific Place and Central Building and at the Gianni Versace boutique at The Peninsula.
