The strong wind signal prompted by the passing of Tropical Storm Nalgae was lowered last night but weather chiefs warned Hong Kong was still in for a buffeting by monsoon winds and possible flooding by exceptionally high tides.

The Observatory said tides had been up to 70cm above normal yesterday and could be even higher overnight, exposing low-lying areas to the threat of flooding.

The strong monsoon signal was hoisted at 7.10 pm, replacing the No 3 typhoon signal which had been in force since 6.40 am. The No 1 standby warning was raised at 10.40am on Sunday. Strong winds with mean speed exceeding 40 km/h were expected from the northeast and gusts would occasionally reach gale force, the Observatory said.

'Flower pots and other objects likely to be blown away should be taken indoors,' it said. 'Those planning water sports activities and operations at sea should take special care against high winds and rough sea conditions.'

Fresh to strong northeasterly winds are expected today, reaching gale force on high ground. The sea will be rough with swells.

The Observatory said it would remain rainy in the next few days.
