Building on his success

Adrian Wan

A 96-year-old former engineer will become the city's oldest recipient of an honorary doctorate.

Ng Wing-hong will receive his honorary degree from Polytechnic University (PolyU) on October 29.

One of the first alumni of the university, he devoted the next 60 years to developing his business in construction. He built and maintained the Shek Kong airfield, a railway network, the University of Hong Kong main campus, and numerous housing projects.

He retired in 1997 and has donated money and time to his alma mater since then. PolyU has already named a building and a tree after him and made him a fellow to recognise his achievements.

'I haven't actually done much other than building in my life,' he said. 'I ... had to work seven days a week, hoping one day I could own a home and raise a family - that was the biggest satisfaction I ever had.'
