Groupies can go too far

I don't think it's just a pop star's talent that makes them successful. I think it's mainly due to groupies.

A groupie is someone obsessed with a star, and follows their news. Sometimes they physically follow them.

Take Justin Bieber. The 17-year-old Canadian is loved by teenage girls around the world who call themselves 'Beliebers'. I prefer the word 'groupies'.

I don't approve of groupies' behaviour. Some go to extreme lengths to make people notice them. I saw a YouTube video of a girl who couldn't get a ticket to a Bieber concert. In it, she cried and lay on the floor.

I felt sorry for her, not only because she couldn't see Bieber, but also because she has nothing else in her life. Looking at these youngsters, I'll be careful never to become a groupie. We can have a favourite singer; we can still listen to music we like, we can still find famous people attractive, but we don't have to be groupies. There is far more in life than one famous person.

Thank you for your letter, Kori. Groupies can really be outrageous, and it seems, according to older people at least, each generation is worse than the one before it.

But, really, the whole phenomenon is quite 'normal' (although I'm sure many parents wish it was not). It's very common in your teens to develop 'crushes'. A crush is when someone is crazily 'in love' with someone: they will think about them all the time and become obsessed with everything to do with that person. It's particularly common to have a crush on a famous person.

Odd as it may sound, this is not all that unusual. As your body changes from being a child to an adult, you can be quite emotional. This is caused by all those hormones racing around. As you grow older this all calms down, and adult life takes over. Only when we have 25-year-olds throwing tantrums about not being able to see Bieber, do we need to be concerned.
