The vibe: decked out in a minimalist design of pale wood, white marble and cream furniture, W52 has always been our pick of the bars on this busy strip because of its cool crowd and great DJs from Thursday to Saturday nights. This chic, sophisticated bar has just become a little better thanks to a renovation that opened up the bar area facing Wyndham Street - and we mean just a little; we really wouldn't have gone to the trouble of renovating.
The drinks: stick to the spirits and cocktails (the wine list is perfunctory and the beers are overpriced at HK$78 a bottle and HK$88 a pint). Of the five signature cocktails, we couldn't resist the W Spice because of the addition of butterscotch schnapps (plus vanilla vodka, pineapple juice and freshly ground black pepper, HK$98), and it was as buttery and delicious as it sounded. We skipped past the decent selection of martinis and standard cocktails and arrived at a selection of concoctions based on the smooth Grey Goose vodka from France. The Grey Goose lychee (Grey Goose L'Orange vodka, triple sec, lychee pur?e, ginger ale and a fresh lychee, HK$108) came in a highball glass and with a fruity kick. If you're with a group, go for the tray of six shots (HK$188) of the signature cocktails or martinis. Elsewhere, the spirits list contains stand-outs such as Smirnoff black vodka (HK$88 a shot), Patron Anejo tequila (HK$108) and Rhum J.M. cask-strength vintage rum (HK$288).
The verdict: yes, it's somewhat overpriced, but in terms of music and premium booze, W52 remains the best bar on Wyndham Street (apologies go to Le Boudoir). Perfect for a warm-up for a big night - or a big night out in itself.
