Harvey Nichols opening gets its grand message across loud and clear to aspirational shoppers

The grand opening cocktail soir?e at Harvey Nichols in Pacific Place Garden Court was anything but subtle.

More than 600 VIPs packed into the centre of the atrium on Tuesday, cordoned off by velvet rope, while onlookers from above had a field day with celebrity sightings.

Top models included Ana Rivera, Alice B, Jacqueline Chong, Cara Groban and Qiqi - with husband Simon Yam Tat-wah in tow.

As guests stood elbow to elbow, trying to make sense of bartending acrobatics, the giant cupcake tower shaped like a woman's ball gown and the three-tiered candy fountain of lollipops and sweets, the lights suddenly dimmed and a series of projection screens descended, enclosing the guests.

Flashing images of the Hong Kong skyline and smiling faces intercut with montages of luxury handbags, watches and clothes filled the enclosure. The message is loud and clear: the new Harvey Nichols flagship store is the place to go for aspirational shopping.

A ribbon-cutting and toasting ceremony was held at the main entrance afterwards, where guests of honour Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, Swire chairman Chris Pratt and Dickson Concepts' Dickson Poon and wife Pearl Yu officially opened the store.
