Hyundai has developed a staunch following for its 2.4-litre Santa Fe (HK$279,470) and two-litre Tucson (HK$206,163) sports utility vehicles in Hong Kong.

Sales of its 2.4-litre diesel H-1 van (from HK$183,800) have also grown from 'around 15 units per month', when it was introduced in 2008, to 'close to 100 cars per month', says dealer Hyundai Hong Kong.

But the South Korean marque's cars are less visible in Hong Kong and Macau.

The 2.4-litre Sonata was as comfortable as a Toyota Camry, and the i30 saloons - at 1.4-litre (HK$148,193) and two litres (HK$171,319) - were designed at Hyundai's Design and Technical Centre in Russelsheim, Germany, and were last year named the Most Satisfying Car in Britain in Auto Express magazine's reliability and satisfaction survey of 23,000 drivers. Hyundai Hong Kong is also 'changing the mindset of people in Hong Kong' who used to think Hyundai was a cheap but inferior marque, says Kevin Lau, general manager of the company which is a unit of Zung Fu.

The dealer has erected a Hyundai signboard on the top of the Wan Chai Revenue Tower and 'garnered over 1,000 fans in less than two weeks' to its local Facebook page. It has also relocated its showroom 'to larger and more strategically located premises', opened by actress Tavia Yeung this month, at the Nam Fung Commercial Centre, in Kowloon Bay, 'to draw more traffic', Lau says.

The dealer is also 'bringing in some of our most stylish and sporty vehicles to this market,' Lau adds. He cites the local launch this month of Hyundai's fifth-generation Elantra (HKD$169,000), which was also designed in Europe. Made in Ulsan, the five-seater saloon is fitted with a four-cylinder, 130-horsepower, 1,591cc engine and competes with the similarly youthful-looking, 1,498cc Mazda3 (from HK$173,800).

The model earned a 5-star safety rating in crash tests, thanks to safety features such as anti-lock braking system, brake assist and electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability program and a vehicle stability management system with six airbags. The dealer offers a five-year guarantee.
