Love You You (Film)
Barry C Chung
A spy (or, in this case, an investigator) falls in love with the very person she's spying on. What an original concept!
And the rest of Jingle Ma's romantic-comedy Love You You is the same, with every twist and turn predictable. At no point are you genuinely surprised - except for one unpredictable angle, which, although intriguing, is tacked on like a loose accessory.
Private investigator Xiami (Angelababy) is sent on a mission to find financial documents belonging to You Lele (Eddie Peng Yu-yan) in a case of suspected fraud.
Needless to say, he eventually finds out her intentions and they fall for each other. This is, after all, a rom-com, the most cliched of genres, that never strays too far from the original formula.
Love You You could have been called Never Ending Story 4. It's not that long - the official running time is only 91 minutes. Structurally, though, the final credits could have started rolling at several places in the story. It's almost as though Ma wants to fool his audience with false endings.
Be warned: in Act Three, you will be bombarded with a series of product placements that are are as blatant as it gets - very much like what Mike Myers was spoofing back in the '90s. YouTube it instead.
