Without the blinkers, gelding shows he is not just a dirt freak

Punters may have pigeon-holed Dennis Yip Chor-hong-trained Smart Kids too quickly as a dirt specialist and they paid for it when the gelding landed the Po Leung Kuk Centenary Cup (1,200m). At 20-1 odds, Smart Kids (Howard Cheng Yue-tin) held off heavily backed Regency Luck to win one of the day's cup races, after having been out of the first four in all his previous five starts at the track and having won only on the all-weather. But with some fine tuning by Yip and the right circumstances, Smart Kids showed he is just as effective at the city track. 'He was fitter today and also I took the blinkers off him. They weren't really helping him at all and he travelled well without them,' Yip said.
