Tourist dies after falling ill in Wan Chai hotel room
A 65-year-old American tourist died in Ruttonjee Hospital early yesterday after falling ill at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel in Wan Chai. He returned to the hotel after a late-night meal and vomited in his room, police said. The man's 32-year-old girlfriend sought help from hotel staff, who called police at about 1.45am. Police said inquiries found nothing suspicious.
Zen champions civic over national education
'What Catholic schools emphasise,' Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun told a University of Hong Kong forum, 'is civic education ... not national education in an extreme style'. He said the government's school-based management policy, which the church has unsuccessfully fought in the courts, and the national education curriculum were attempts by the government to 'control school sponsoring bodies'. The devil was in the detail of the proposed new curriculum, he said.
Two jailed after tricking locksmith and robbing flat
Fan Sau-leung, 40, and Angela Chan Mei-yu, 24, were jailed for two years and two months after pleading guilty to burglary. The District Court heard they had convinced a locksmith they were the tenants of a Wong Tai Sin flat and had lost the key. They burgled the flat of property worth HK$189,000 after the locksmith opened the door.
HKUST programme tops Financial Times rankings
The University of Science and Technology's executive master of business administration programme, run jointly with the Kellogg School of Business Management in the US, topped a Financial Times ranking for the third straight year. Chinese University's programme was ranked 14.
MPF threshold rises to HK$6,500 next month
The income threshold at which employees must start paying into their Mandatory Provident Fund rises from HK$5,000 a month to HK$6,500 on November 1.
