City University of Hong Kong will open a new HK$750 million creative media centre this Friday. Cutting-edge facilities include the city's first live motion-capture technology studio - similar to the one used to produce blockbusters Avatar and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

The Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre also boasts a 3D movie lab complete with sound-mixing and film-editing equipment that allows students to produce post-modern movies and animations.

Jeffrey Shaw, dean of the creative media school, wants to turn the centre into the city's creative hub.

'We introduced the future movie production lab because 3D movies are the current trend,' Shaw says. 'It provides one-stop film facilities for 140 students - from designing, shooting to post-production.'

The building also features a black box theatre which seats 200. It can be used for performances, lectures and screening 3D films.
