Police may upgrade the Tseung Kwan O division into a fully fledged police district after the public outcry over a recent series of chopping attacks on pedestrians, the security chief said yesterday.

The police are studying the reorganisation of Kowloon East region to see how they can better serve local communities, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee Siu-kwong said in a written reply to lawmaker Gary Chan Hak-kan.

The region comprises Kwun Tong, Tseung Kwan O, Sai Kung, Ngau Tau Kok and Sau Mau Ping.

Community leaders have called for more police in Tseung Kwan O after the chopping attacks this month and a string of teenage crimes that have raised community concern.

Kwan Ping-wai has been charged with wounding with intent in relation to the chopping attacks on four pedestrians on the night of October 2-3. He has entered no plea and his case has been adjourned until today pending the receipt of medical reports.

The attacks heightened residents' concerns, Chan said.

In July, Sai Kung district councillor Chan Kai-wai said residents were increasingly worried about rising teenage gang-related crimes in Tseung Kwan O.
