Re-elected with one of the widest margins in Argentina's history, Fernandez won the strongest mandate for an Argentine president since the end of the 1976-83 dictatorship. No leader had won such a big share of the vote since General Juan Domingo Peron was elected for the third time with 62 per cent of the vote in 1973. The result marks a dramatic change of fortune for a leader who was once expected to be ousted early as angry protests by farmers and middle-class voters battered her approval ratings soon after she took office.

French President Sarkozy and German Chancellor Merkel staved off a financial disaster by managing to push through a deal to fix Europe's festering debt crisis. The two-day nuptials between Lee, 36, and her Canadian partner of eight years drew hundreds of guests to the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, a list that reportedly included Oprah Winfrey, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Tommy Hilfiger.
