Sprinters steal the show at city championships

Sprinters provided the highlights of the XTep Hong Kong Track and Field Championship finals at Wan Chai Sports Ground yesterday, the culmination of a long season of qualifying events.

Fong Yee-pui claimed the double in the women's 100m and 200m finals, but was denied a personal best (PB) for the 100m as she had to battle a head wind of 1.4 metres per second.

'I was confident of lowering my PB today as my training has been going well in recent weeks,' Fong, 19, said. She set a personal best time of 11.91 seconds at the Universiade in Shenzhen in August.

Ng Ka-fung celebrated his junior 100m record, but was denied the honour when the wind speed was adjudged to have been unacceptable at plus 2.3 metres per second.

'It didn't feel like the wind was helping me, so obviously I'm disappointed to miss the record,' Ng said. He won a silver medal at the Inter-City Games in China two weeks ago with a personal best time of 10.40.

Taking to the track an hour later for the 200m final, Ng pulled up in the home straight with a strained hamstring when challenged by Lai Ho-ki, who won the race in 21.61.

A fun element was introduced to the proceedings to celebrate the HKAAA 60th anniversary, with four veterans events for athletes aged over 40.

Chan Kim-hung, 80, drew a standing ovation from the packed stand with his time of 4:36.59 for the 800m.
