Imagining Disney anew

About 70 teams submitted applications in September to Hong Kong Disneyland's first Walt Disney Imagineering ImagiNations Design Competition.

The amusement park had invited locals to design a planned attraction zone, rides and a hotel.

Applicants include 300 students from eight local universities, the Hong Kong Arts Centre and the Vocational Training Centre.

The 12 to 16 teams that will be shortlisted will present their projects later this month.

The winning team will travel to the headquarters of Walt Disney Imagineering in California and receive six weeks of work experience at Hong Kong Disneyland.

'It is really important to have a deep understanding of the market by having local people be part of your team,' said Imagineering creative senior vice-president Joe Lanzisero.

He said Asia's first Toy Story Land, which is to open this month, has been designed to make guests feel 'small', as if they were toys.

'Creativity is being able to come up with something new that no one has thought of before,' Lanzisero said. 'Entrants should be able to jump out of the box and tell the story of their design.'

The competition is already in its 20th year in the United States.

Disney's Imagineering department is in charge of designing park features and facilities to create a dreamlike journey for visitors.
