Operation Santa Claus (OSC) is giving funding to the Hong Kong Federation of the Blind to set up VTV (Visual Impairment TV), an online audio and visual programme hosted by the visually impaired.

Jointly organised by South China Morning Post and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), OSC has supported more than 100 charities over the years.

The federation plans to use the money to employ DJs from RTHK to train 40 blind web DJs, and to buy equipment to set up a studio. They hope to produce at least five programmes every week.

Galant Ng Ka-lun, a rehabilitation worker for the federation, says there will be both visual and audio content, and topics will be diverse. 'The programmes are suitable for both blind and sighted people. There will be tips to make life for the blind easier, facts to help sighted people understand what it's like to be blind, and entertainment,' he says.

Kenon Kwong Chung-on, a member of the federation, was excited about the chance to become a DJ. Kwong, who writes columns for local newspapers, says he will host talk shows with celebrities. 'I consider myself to be in the creative industry, so I'd like to invite singers, songwriters and fashion designers to be interviewed. The federation has connections with those people, and hopefully I will be able to create talk shows like the ones on RTHK.'
