SUPERSTAR Kevin Costner is being hailed as a hero for saving the life of his stunt double on the set of his latest movie, Waterworld.

Stuntman Norman Howell was in agony with 'the bends' after he surfaced too quickly from an underwater scene being shot in Hawaii.

Quick-thinking Costner realised his pal needed treatment in a decompression chamber and organised a flight to the capital Honolulu, where Howell later recovered.

It was the latest setback to shooting of the movie, running massively over budget.
