Dream House (Film)

In the thriller Dream House, a successful New York publisher's life is turned upside down after he and his family move into their new dreamhouse. Daniel Craig plays Will Atenton, who heads to a suburban area with his wife Libby (Rachel Weisz) and their two daughters.

Strange things begin to happen around the house. First, Will discovers suspicious footprints outside his door, then his daughters and wife spot a hooded man spying on them.

Will later discovers that the house was the scene of a grisly murder and the alleged killer is at large.

As he sets out to investigate, Will stumbles upon an even bigger secret.

Director Jim Sheridan gets the thriller formula right: two children, an ominous basement, some mirrors.

But he struggles to find a focus for the story. The movie sways indecisively between a classic thriller, an unusual drama with a jaw-dropping twist, and a strange, ghostly love story. There aren't many scare-you-off-the-chair thrills and the timing is often off. You see the final revelation coming well ahead of time - not least because the trailer for the movie gives too much away.

A dull script and indifferent music don't help either. Nor does the over-romanticised relationship between Mr and Mrs Atenton. You might be better off just watching the trailer.
