Kiprotich happy to take gold in HK heat
Thomas Kiprotich enjoyed a gun-to-tape win in the New Balance Gold Coast 15km at Tsuen Wan yesterday.
The Kenyan-born runner (pictured) said his recent training had been going well and that his plan for the race was to take a tilt at the Hong Kong record.
However, when he woke up yesterday morning and saw the temperature, Kiprotich decided to just run and enjoy the race, finishing in 51 minutes and 25 seconds for his win.
Gi Ka-man (52:29) placed a distant second from the 1,400 starters but worked hard all the way to the finish line. Colin Fishwick (53:52) completed the race in third, also working hard in the hot weather.
Chow Chi-ngan also enjoyed a gun-to-tape victory in winning the women's race in 62:49, but was able to take her foot off the gas after the 10km mark and coast to the finish.
Veteran runner Angelina Kong placed second overall in 65:10 - a solid performance after months of injury problems that have prevented her from racing. Triathlete Christine Wang finished in third place in the women's race with a time of 67:53.
