Tonight's the night for Super Plus
Super Plus doesn't win many, but he has all the right ingredients to see him back in the winner's stall after the Fakei Cup (1,000m) at Happy Valley tonight to continue a booming start to the new term for his trainer.
Peter Ng Bik-kuen has topped 18 winners in only two of the past 18 seasons, with his best 22 wins, but bolstered by a number of nice transfers from Alex Wong Yu-on, he has flown from the gates this season like a scalded cat.
In two months of racing, Ng has eight wins already and his horses are racing so well he will be into double figures any time soon, and Super Plus (Ben So Tik-hung) finds himself in just the spot to take advantage of that momentum.
Trained by Ng for just his last four Valley runs, Super Plus has produced three seconds and a fourth in those outings, but even that consistency doesn't tell the full tale. The gelding has drawn wide in three of those starts and had tough runs both times this season from outside gates, but has given it his all to finish close up.
With four wins from 39 starts and one win in over two years, the seven-year-old is no star, but with a light weight and a draw that should see So able to pick his place in the run, tonight's the night.
Nevertheless, the race is not an easy one for punters, with a good spread of chances due more to the absence of good form than the oversupply.
Lightly raced Palepale gives Tim Clark another chance in a trophy event after working to the line nicely on debut over this trip behind Double Luck.
Drawn out that night, Clark was forced to go well back early to find the rail, the David Ferraris-trained Palepale did his job well enough at the finish and is better drawn this time in seven on the bigger 'A' course.
First-up Valley specialist Glenealy Star (Terry Wong Chi-wai), widely-drawn Danewin Winning (Gerald Mosse) and Double Luck (Keith Yeung Ming-lun) also have chances in the wide-open contest, but they are not the only ones.
