Villagers foil Henderson eviction plan
Henderson Land Development failed to evict tenants from a house in Ma Si Po village in Fanling yesterday, but has vowed to return in two weeks.
A dozen company representatives were blocked by villagers at about 11am yesterday when they came to eject the Lai family from the house which the developer bought in 2006. The tenants had been told to leave by yesterday.
The eviction attempt follows other successful removals by the developer since the mid-1990s.
It has accelerated its efforts in recent months after a government study into possible redevelopment of the area.
A villager said the attempted eviction was unreasonable as there was no imminent development on the site, and the future land use had not yet been decided by the government.
The villagers said they would try to arrange a meeting with Henderson, which owns between 70 and 80 per cent of the village. Most of the remaining 100 residents are not from the area.
