New designer and jeweller to turn up the heat with smokin' glamour looks

Up-and-coming designer Susanna Ngao was surprised when more than 500 guests turned up for the first runway show of her S.Nine fashion brand at Central nightclub Play.

'It's really a great encouragement,' said Ngao, who trained at New York's Parsons design school before working with French couturier Anne Valerie Hash. Ngao set up S.Nine about two years ago and counts the likes of Canto-pop divas Kelly Chen Wai-lam and Karen Mok Man-wai as fans.

She teamed up with local jeweller Karen Collection for the fashion presentation, hosted by networking club French Tuesdays as part of its global Black and White Party series.

The designer departed from her previous romantic style and channelled a glamorous look for the autumn-winter collection, titled Clair de Lune.

Models snaked down the runway at Tuesday's event in 70s-inspired, body-hugging metallic shifts, flirty lace cocktail dresses and luxe velvet tube dresses. 'I was thinking Yves Saint Laurent le Smoking while working on this collection. Very glamorous and strong femininity,' Ngao said. 'The evening pieces will be great for the year-end festivities.'

It's never too early to start planning your Christmas outfit. The designer said a fur or silk cape was her key item for a 2011 autumn-winter wardrobe update.

'They are very easy to wear and versatile. You can wear a cape on top of a cocktail dress to a party or work one into your daily office attire for an effortless chic style,' she said.

Ngao recently opened an appointment-only showroom on Wyndham Street in Central. Check out snineonline.com for details.
