Hong Kong will soon have an online TV channel hosted by blind people. The Hong Kong Federation of the Blind plans to set up the channel, Visual Impairment Television, with support from Operation Santa Claus.

Tony Shing Li-lim of the Federation of the Blind said: 'The channel will empower the blind through showcasing their talents. Hopefully, the exposure will help them to obtain employment from companies in the private sector or mainstream media.'

Under the federation's plan, the project will train 40 blind people to be hosts each year. Funds raised by Operation Santa Claus (OSC) will be used to buy equipment and hire people with production expertise.

OSC is an annual fund-raising campaign jointly organised by the South China Morning Post and Radio Television Hong Kong. This year, it has identified 16 Hong Kong-based charities that help the needy in Hong Kong and on the mainland.

'For people who lose their vision after having it when younger blindness is a very harsh reality to adjust to,' Shing said. 'For them to live happily and healthy again, they have to be courageous and they also need assistance from society.'

So far, the online television station has plans to produce five programmes. One will focus on parenting, and another on choosing restaurants that serve high-quality meats.

Ng hopes the programmes will help the public better understand blind people, showing their talents and needs. 'If they don't understand us, they don't know our needs and abilities. The barriers will always be there,' he said.
