The Porsche Panamera is probably the most distinctive car on the road. Broad, muscular and head-turningly sleek, the Panamera is unmistakably Porsche, yet if offers the rear-seat stretch of a luxury sedan, the breathtaking speed of a supercar and at weekends the space, comfort, happy memories and track-tested safety of a Porsche four-door Gran Turismo family saloon.

The Panamera 'has achieved stunning success in the Hong Kong market' since its world premiere in Shanghai, 'in late 2009', says Derek Tong, the general manager of Porsche Centre Hong Kong and Macau.

'Building on this, the model range is now further strengthened to seven models in Hong Kong with two exciting additions: the new Panamera S Hybrid and the new Panamera Turbo S,' he says. 'Setting performance and consumption benchmarks in their segments, these two new models, in their own distinctive ways, deliver undiluted driving performance combined with day-to-day practicality and efficiency, hallmarks of Porsche Intelligent Performance.'

The Panamera S Hybrid (HK$1.772 million) represents Porsche's latest advances in fuel efficiency technology without sacrificing its sporting driving dynamics and elegant travel for four passengers. The new Panamera S Hybrid is equipped with a 3.0-litre V6 compressor engine delivering 333hp (245 kW). This is supported by a 47hp (34 kW) electric motor, for a combined output of 380hp (279kW).

'Under a 'Parallel Full Hybrid' system, the petrol and electric motors are capable of powering the Panamera S Hybrid either alone or in combination,' the Porsche Centre says. 'The electric motor also operates both as a generator and a starter. Connected via an advanced decoupler, the electric motor sits between the combustion engine and the transmission. The electric motor is connected to a nickel metal hydride battery (NiMh) where the electrical energy recovered from braking and driving is stored.

The Panamera has an 8-speed Tiptronic S gearbox fitted as standard and achieves a fuel consumption of 7.1 l/100 km based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) - which equates to CO2 emissions of just 167g/km.

'This makes it the most economical Porsche of all time and puts it significantly ahead of all the full hybrid production vehicles in its segment when it comes to fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.' the dealer explains.

The new Panamera S Hybrid can also sprint to 100km/h in just 6.0 seconds, only a fraction behind its V8 petrol-engined siblings, and its top speed is 270km/h. The hybrid Gran Turismo's range in purely electric mode is approximately two kilometres with all electric driving possible up to speeds of 75km/h, Tong says. The Porsche hybrid drive is the only system in the world able to exploit additional consumption reserves, thanks to the 'sailing' function on motorways and main roads, the dealer adds. 'This entails disengaging and switching off the combustion engine at speeds of up to 165km/h during phases when no power is required by the combustion engine,' it says.

With the new top-of-the-range Panamera Turbo S model (HK$2.798 million), Porsche is raising the bar yet another notch. Its 4.8-litre, V8 bi-turbocharged engine, now equipped with modified light-weight titanium-aluminium turbine wheels, delivers 550hp (405 kW) and 750Nm of torque, and enables sprints to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds with Launch Control and a top speed of 306km/h. But its fuel consumption is low, at 11.5 litres per 100km.

Electronic performance-enhancing systems include Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, which reduces body roll when cornering; Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, which varies the amount of torque sent to each rear wheel, and Sport Chrono Package Turbo, which changes engine and suspension responses, The new Panamera Turbo S is also equipped with Servotronic speed-sensitive steering and a sport exhaust system.

'The sporty character of the new Panamera Turbo S is apparent not just in its performance but is also reflected in the interior and exterior styling,' the dealer says. 'The 20-inch Turbo II wheels with increased rear axle track width, side skirts from Porsche Exclusive and the auto-deploying two-piece rear spoiler in the exterior colour ensure a particularly sporty appearance.'
