Aesop raises the bar

Australian skincare brand Aesop has created an installation for its new shop at the I.T Hysan One flagship store in Causeway Bay.

Continuing the quest to showcase creativity by giving new life to humble materials - such as using recycled 19th-century newspapers to furnish its first New York store - this time the brand's founder and creative director, Dennis Paphitis, has teamed with Cheungvogl architects to create this innovative pop-up exhibition space.

Eight hundred resin boxes housing Aesop formulations are arranged atop oxidised steel rods of varying heights, hinting at the inspiration the duo took from a black-and-white image of hundreds of floating lanterns. Paphitis and the brand's global ambassador - Suzanne Santos, who co-founded the company in 1987 - were in town to celebrate.

Qing gems go under the hammer

Treasure Auctioneer - the largest locally owned auction house in Hong Kong - threw open the doors for its public previews yesterday. The Fall Auction takes place on Sunday and next week from Tuesday to Thursday at the Grand Hyatt and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. The previews run at the same venues until Tuesday. Approximately 1,350 pieces, including Chinese paintings and calligraphy, watches, jewels, fine jadeite, and Chinese ceramics will go under the hammer.

Among the highlights is a Qing dynasty imperial carved white jade pendant and painter Liu Danzhai's Gathering Under the Pine, a rare underglazed blue and red and overglazed rose enamelled pear-shaped Qing vase with the Yongzheng imperial mark, estimated to fetch between HK$15 million and HK$20 million.

A charity auction of 30 drawings and works of calligraphy will also be offered with proceeds going to the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals' 'i'mperfect' Art Development Programme for Artists with Disabilities.
