Hiu-lam, 16, is a shooting guard of the Hong Kong youth basketball team. She represented Hong Kong at the Schools Interport Basketball Championships held here in May. The team won the tournament.

Hiu-lam joined the nine other Hong Kong girls in August to attend the Nike Festival of Sports in Shanghai, where they played friendly matches with teams from the mainland and Chinese-Taipei.

Last month she played in the seventh National Intercity Games in Jiangxi. The Hong Kong girls finished ninth among 12 teams in the competition.

Hiu-lam has just joined South China Athletics Association's women's basketball team in Hong Kong's First Division.

'I injured a tendon in my left knee last year when I was just starting to play at a higher level. Because of the injury, I missed out on the Guangdong-Hongkong-Macau Basketball Exchange Programme,' she says. 'I had to undergo surgery. I was worried and told my surgeon to be extra careful as I still wanted to play basketball. I was relieved when I was told these kinds of injuries are common in the sport. I had fully recovered by around February this year.

'I've had several injuries that slowed me down in my career, but overall I had a successful 2011.

'I was going to play at the All China Secondary Schools Students' Games in Inner Mongolia in July, but I hurt my right ankle weeks before my departure. I was forced to cancel the trip. I felt depressed at the time because I had missed another opportunity.

'I returned to the court in late July. I was accepted to the Nike All-Hong Kong Youth Basketball League 2011. I was among the top three scorers in the concluding tournament of the league programme. The achievement boosted my confidence and cheered me up. I played at the Intercity Games last month in my first major multi-sport event.'

From her coach

'Hiu-lam is an active athlete at school. She was a committee member of our sports association last year. She participates in many sport teams at school and is willing to share her experience with teammates,' says PE teacher Cheung Yin-miu.

'I hope to play for South China in upcoming Kung Sheung Cup matches. I'll also join selection for the 2012 Asian Schools Basketball Championships in June, after my HKDSE exams,' Hiu-lam says.
