Kimchee Korean Restaurant

G/F The Cameron, 33 Cameron Road, Tsim Sha Tsui
Tel: 2628 0136
Open: 11.30am-1am
Cuisine: Korean

Price: about HK$265 without drinks and the service charge

Ambience: bright and airy, the long space is far better decorated than most other Korean restaurants. There were just a few other customers on a drizzly weeknight.

Pros: the booths are comfortable, and the ventilation is good: we didn't come out of the restaurant smelling of barbecued meats.

Cons: stick to the barbecue; the other dishes we tried were not as good. The banchan (side dishes) were predictable and unmemorable. Kimchi and snail meat salad (HK$128) was too sweet. I ordered the chef's recommendation of a spicy version of beef shin soup (HK$138), but a non-spicy one was served, so we sent it back. What was served tasted as if the chef had just added chilli flakes to the bowl we rejected: the chilli flavour was one-dimensional and hadn't integrated into the other ingredients. The bean paste served with the lettuce leaves tasted home-made, but it was a paltry portion for HK$55. We had to ask that our tabletop grill be turned on; it should have been the first thing the waitress did when we ordered barbecue so that it would be hot when the cooking started.

Recommended dishes: premium beef ribs (HK$248) could be ordered salted or marinated; we chose the latter. The beef was thickly cut and a substantial serving, and the marinade had an unexpected but pleasant peppery kick. Pork belly (HK$120) had a nice layering of fat and meat. Green onion salad (HK$42) went well with the two barbecued meats.

What else? Kimchee also has outlets in Mong Kok (tel: 2628 0680) and Tsim Sha Tsui (tel: 2628 0822).
