Name Leo Li Ming-chak
School Lai King Catholic Secondary School
Grade Form Six
Leo, 17, plays as a shooting guard for South China Athletics Association in the local Second Division. His team came third in this year's LCSD Cup.
He joined the Grizzly Bear team in the 2011 Nike All-Hong Kong Youth Basketball League. They won the under-19, 5-on-5 competition.
Leo is also the captain of his school team. Last year, they reached the quarter-finals of the Grade A boys' category at the Inter-school Basketball Competition (Kwai Tsing, Division Two).
'Life is unpredictable. Last year, I was among the oldest players in my age group [under-16] applying for the Nike All-Hong Kong Youth Basketball League but my application was rejected,' Leo says. 'This year, I was promoted to the under-19 age group and I qualified [for the competition]. Even though I didn't play much, it was a nice experience being around top players.
'The boys from CNEC Christian College are the biggest threat to our hopes of winning the Inter-school Basketball Competition this year. They competed in Division One in Kwai Tsing District last year and their Grade A team captured the bronze medal. But they were downgraded to Division Two this year because of poor performances by their Grade B and Grade C teams.
'CNEC's Grade A line-up is almost the same this year. We are in different halves of the draw and we expect to meet them in the final.
'I think it is unfair that even the champion team of the Division Two competition in our district cannot play in the Jing Ying Tournament while champion teams of Division Two and Three in Kowloon can participate. I hope the organisers change the regulations.'
From his coach
'I have been coaching Leo and his teammates since Form One. He excels in several sports, but he mostly focuses on basketball. He always listens to me and has good leadership skills,' says Ma Kwok-choy, PE teacher and coach of the school basketball team.
'I hope we can win the inter-school championship for my coach Ma. I will also work hard to gain selection for the upcoming 2012 Asian Schools Basketball Championships,' says Leo.
