Key to career in auditing

Executive Diploma in Internal Audit HKU SPACE

Every company has an internal auditing department that calls for highly qualified professionals. The executive diploma in internal audit provides in-depth knowledge for professionals interested in working in this capacity.

The course delivers internal auditing knowledge, and students learn about its role in governance risk and control, IT involving accounting, and business management skills.

'It is highly career oriented. It trains students for the professional exam of the US-based Institute of Internal Auditors, for the globally recognised Certified Internal Auditor professional designation,' says Olivia Lui, programme director, at the University of Hong Kong's School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE).

The course is divided into four modules: internal audit's role in governance, risk and control; conducting the internal audit engagement; business analysis and IT; and business management skills.

Each module consists of 30 hours of teaching on weekday evenings. Assessment of each is based on a mid-test and internal final module exam. To graduate, students must have attended 70 per cent of classes.

Upon the successful completion of two modules, students are awarded the executive certificate; upon four, the executive diploma.

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor's degree or equivalent. Those with senior-level work experience will also be considered for the course.

The normal completion time is six to nine months, but students can spend up to two years on the programme.
