For HK youngsters, trust is the answer

Teenagers consider trust to be the most important aspect in a relationship, according to a survey.

The Church of United Brethren in Christ's social service division surveyed 3,207 students, aged 12 to 23, over the past two months on their perception of love. Forty per cent of respondents had dated before.

Of 39 traits, the young people considered trust, consideration, loyalty, good communication and honesty the five most important.

Some of the most difficult to fulfil were materialistic desires, constant presence and being romantic.

The organisation's social worker Lee Mei-ying thinks the results are a positive sign that teens treat relationships seriously.

'Even though some movies focus on [loose morals] ... it is not what all young people do,' Lee says. 'The survey found such negative values in popular culture have limited impact on teenagers.' She added that some teenagers are proactive, and ask the organisation for relationship advice.

While Lee stresses that the organisation does not advocate dating, she says schools should teach students how to handle relationship issues.
