The importance of reading

Imagine a society where children face the possibility of entering adulthood as functional illiterates! That thought was running through my mind at the relaunch of the Barbados Association of Reading last weekend.

A passion for reading is necessary but I find that not enough young people share it. There are too many activities, sadly, like the video games that take up so much time. Many parents are guilty of putting their children in front of the television as an activity.

Parents, I urge you to read to your children, from the Bible to the Classics to West Indian stories, even pass on some stories that you heard as children. As they develop, buy some books and let them read to you, even though it might take longer for them to finish a word, a sentence or a page. Simple activities like this do wonders for a child.

Toys are fine, but books are great! So, with all of the hustle and bustle this Christmas, make sure that you share the gift of a book and pass on that passion for learning to younger ones.

Also, find a little time to read a good book over the holidays. After all, a good book can entertain, relax and inform you.

Thank you for your letter, Eugenie. Reading is one of those things we tend to take for granted. You are right when you say that we waste a lot of time playing video games or watching television. I have to put my own hand up as guilty as charged. I wish people did read more. Books abound with ideas, creativity and of course great storylines. It's hard to imagine a future where life is ruled by 'pls msg mi' and 'lol'.

I love your line 'Toys are fine but books are great!' I hope it proves an inspiration to Young Post readers.
