Melo Spa at the Hyatt Regency in Sha Tin has introduced three spa packages designed to warm and hydrate the skin during the winter months. One of them, Melo Delicacy Harmony, tackles dry skin on the body and the face, with a rose bath, massage and facial.

The private treatment room is flooded with natural light and designed with a clean, neutral palette. There's a private terrace with a mountain view, though the shutters are soon drawn for modesty's sake.

The treatment starts off with a rose petal aromatic hydrotherapy bath. The tub is large and a generous bowlful of salts and dried rose petals is poured in. You're then left alone in the whirlpool with a loofah for 30 minutes - which some may consider unusually long. I was scrubbed clean within the first five minutes, relaxed in 10, and began to feel like a waterlogged raisin after 20.

The therapist finally returns and begins a 'tranquility massage', using essential oils of geranium, lavender and ylang ylang. It feels like a mix between a relaxing Swedish massage and a milder version of a Chinese lymphatic massage, with sweeping movements to encourage blood circulation.

When you're suitably tranquil, there's an invigorating scalp massage to bring you back to the present, and you're gently informed that it's time for the rehydrating facial. Not that it requires much input from you (you remain lying down for the entire two hours).

All the products used for the facial are by French brand Payot. The skin is first cleansed and gently scrubbed. A gemstone balm containing rhodocrosite extract for stressed skin is applied via a deeply relaxing thorough face, neck and decollete massage, designed to restore suppleness to the skin. Then a hydrating mask is applied, followed by a detoxing eye cream, intensive hydrating serum, and long-lasting hydrating cream.

Just when you begin to wonder if your limbs will ever work again after all this lying around, the treatment ends and the therapist tiptoes around preparing your slippers, gown and a refreshing hot lemon and green apple infusion.

All that massaging in of products brings a fresh glow to the face, which lasts for several hours. Skin on both body and face feels soothed, hydrated and not excessively greasy.

Melo Delicacy Harmony package is available until January 31 and costs HK$1,500 (2 1/2 hours).
