Hand waving gets the job done at parking black spots in Central
Interest in the illegal car-parking saga has not abated. Information on black spots and complaints about lack of action by the police and traffic wardens are still coming in. We were, however, pleased to see police doing their duty during lunch by waving seven-seaters and the like away from the Mandarin Oriental and Prince's Building on the other side of the road. But no tickets were issued.
Meanwhile, Glenealy was its usual lunch chaos with double parking on the bend. One of the biggest trouble spots involves people movers stopping in front of St Paul's Church Kindergarten to deposit or pick up those little darlings, oblivious to traffic behind as they block the single lane.
On December 15, the new law against idling engines comes into effect. However, given the timid dealing meted out to the seven-seater set and illegal parking, we are not holding our breath.
If nothing else, the new ordinance enables the Environmental Protection Department and the government to say it is doing something about improving air quality and 'protecting public health'. Passing a law is much more fun that actually enforcing it. As the saying goes: 'A little BS goes a long way.'
