Lawyers use heads and feet for charity

International law firm Clifford Chance has given Operation Santa Claus (OSC) uninterrupted support for 11 years not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it captures the imagination of staff, says Peter Charlton, the firm's Asia-Pacific managing partner.

Money raised by the firm for OSC, an annual charity appeal jointly organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK, comes from a city-wide five-a-side soccer tournament and an in-house quiz.

Since it was set up in 1988, OSC has supported more than 100 charities. Money this year goes to 16 Hong Kong-based charities that help the needy here and on the mainland.

Keith Finucane, Clifford Chance's financial controller, estimates that the firm has donated more than HK$1 million to the campaign over the past 11 years.

The Arsenal fan has been organising the firm's participation in the tournament for 11 years because he loves soccer and appreciates OSC's contribution to the community.

For five years, the financial controller has also put on a Santa costume and played with children at the football tournament.

'We like the OSC concept,' Charlton said. 'It's a great cause.

'It is not about a particular charity, it is spread across a number of charities. So it has a lot of resonance with everybody in Hong Kong and it is what people should be doing at Christmas, supporting the local community in various different ways.

'The activities also capture the imagination of our staff. It's our staff that make our contribution to OSC.'

The managing partner said that the firm engaged in local and international charitable activities.

Apart from encouraging its lawyers to engage in pro bono services, the law firm supports charitable programmes for education, access to justice and access to finance.
