After a hard day of studying, deciding how to spend the night in a fun and relaxing way is something university students take seriously.

Many blow off steam by playing online games and shopping online.

After his classes in the afternoon, Li Feilong, a sophomore at Foshan University, gets takeaway food from the canteen, heads back to his dormitory, switches on his computer and gets down to play. He stops only to have a bite.

'A day's learning makes me tired, so I play games to relax,' Li says. Four of his six dorm mates spend their evenings gaming as well. They usually stay up until 1am or 2am.

Other students prefer to watch sitcoms and do a bit of online shopping. Su Yan and Lin Ziyao from Jinan University often download US TV dramas and watch them for five or six hours.

'We like to relax this way because we can learn a lot from such TV series,' they say.

The two also enjoy shopping online. 'Online shopping gives us a chance to buy what we want without having to leave our room,' Su says. 'We can also buy nice products at a discount.'

But some students leave their rooms. Beigang village lies between Sun Yat-sen University and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Centre. Many students love hanging out there at night. They cram into pavement snack bars.

One of them is Chen Yuefeng, a senior at Sun Yat-sen University. 'Sometimes we come to celebrate here after winning a basketball match,' he says. 'Other times we come here to find solace among friends after break-ups with girlfriends.'

Chen says such nights out help strengthen the bond between friends.

'We share our sorrows and we share our joys. Making a toast lifts everyone's mood,' he says.
