Chipmunks cast adrift in animated adventure

Here's a little-known fact: songwriter and musician Ross Bagdasarian Sr created the Chipmunks' squeaky voices in 1958 by recording them in an ultra-low and slow voice with a slowed-down recorder and then playing back at regular speed.

Bagdasarian named the three spirited rodents after executives from his record label: Al Bennett, Si Waronker and Theodore Keep.

Fifty years later, the charming little troublemakers are back on the big screen with their third CGI/live-action adventure: Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

Alvin (voiced by Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) are vacationing on a luxury cruise liner with their female counterparts, the Chipettes - Brittany (Christina Applegate), Jeanette (Anna Faris) and Eleanor (Amy Poehler) - and their manager-guardian Dave Seville (Jason Lee).

Before you can say 'Allllvin!' (as Dave often cries out in distress at Alvin's mischievousness), the 'munks land themselves and the Chipettes in a whole heap of trouble. They become 'chipwrecked' on a remote island. A despairing Dave sets out to find and rescue them.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked opens tomorrow
