A time for dreaming and setting goals

Hanjin Tan, singer-songwriter

I wish to be more self-disciplined and to become a useful person. My first solo concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum is coming up on February 24. On top of that, I still have 60 more episodes to shoot for my TV sitcom on TVB, which usually takes three or four days per week to shoot. I have to make sure I have enough time to finish my arrangements and rehearsals for the big gig. Discipline is key. While stress is the greatest enemy, staying well-paced and calm is the solution. I've recently come to suspect that my calling in life might not be music, per se. It's more my performance that seems to make people smile. I'd like to investigate this in 2012.

Candy Lo, socialite

Health is always the most important thing. You can do nothing without a healthy body. I also hope that our family can be as happy as always and that my three sons behave well and listen to us - it's what all parents want. Actually, so far they've been good, but my two elder sons are teenagers so it takes a lot of time, patience and tolerance to communicate with them. That's something I have to work on. I don't want our relationship to be affected by any arguments we may have.

I'm wishing for cleaner air and oceans in the New Year. The last couple of years, my asthma has been particularly aggravated and that's usually a sign that the air is getting dirtier. Part of lessening pollution would come from people producing and using just what we need and not more. We need to take care of our natural resources and the earth, and find happiness and satisfaction from that state of mind. I've been a vegetarian since I was 11 years old. I think if we can motivate everyone in the city to have one vegetarian day a week, it would give the environment and livestock a well-deserved break.'

Dorian Ho, fashion designer

Everyone has been talking about the end of the world lately, because of some ancient prophecy for 2012. I had someone asking me what I would do if this New Year's Eve was my last. I'm not buying into that story since my fortune-teller told me I'd live to be 83 years old. I sincerely wish for world peace this coming year. Let's keep things positive. On a personal note, I'm hoping to make it to Rome early in the year to catch up with some old friends. But with the autumn collection design in full swing and New York fashion week coming up, I don't know if I'll be able to fulfil that resolution.

Joyce Cheng Yan-yee, singer-actress

I'm pretty much over the 'I'm going to diet and lose 20 pounds' kind of New Year's resolution. They are silly and never work. This year, I promise to wake up and think of five things I'm grateful for every day. It's the kind of resolution that is positive and that you want to stick to. It's a win-win situation. As for my career, my hope is to make another album and hold another concert - since I had such a good time with the last one.
