Driver in nullah after police chase

Adrian Wan

A driver led police on a wild chase in Tin Shui Wai yesterday, hitting a taxi and a police car before his car plunged into a nullah.

Police have arrested a man, 29, on suspicion of drink-driving and dangerous driving.

The mayhem started when officers in a patrol car saw a vehicle zig-zagging along the Yuen Long Highway at about 5.30am.

The officers ordered the driver to stop, but he sped off, running red lights and crashing into the other vehicles before landing in the nullah.

Nobody was hurt.

Meanwhile, two people remained in critical condition in hospital after a minibus crashed into a bus stop in Kwun Tong on Saturday night. Parts of the shelter's metal roof smashed through the windscreen and into passenger seats. More than 20 people were injured in the incident.

The cause of the accident was still being investigated, a police spokesman said.

About 40 traffic accidents happen every day on average, typically causing 50 injuries, according to the Transport Department.
