It's been a sweet year: Stars of Taiwanese hit 'Apple of My Eye' give fans a slice of holiday cheer
The Taiwanese romantic comedy You Are the Apple of My Eye now holds the Hong Kong box office record for a Chinese-language film after two months at the top, beating comedy king Stephen Chow Sing-chi's 2004 film Kung Fu Hustle.
The new feature, centred on the friendships and puppy loves of a group of secondary school students, has been so well received locally that at least three New Year countdowns cashed in on the craze.
Lead actors Ko Chen-tung and Michelle Chen Yan-si were both in town for the holidays for promotions. Ko celebrated with fans on New Year's Eve at the Mikiki mall in San Po Kong, while Chen visited Kwun Tong's APM mall. Since Causeway Bay's WTC mall failed to book any of the film's stars, promoters instead hired Ko and Chen lookalikes.
At the APM event, a fan jumped onstage and tried to give Chen a hug. 'I have never seen a fan do this before,' said Chen, who chatted about the surprise backstage. 'He even asked me if I wanted to move to Hong Kong. That's pretty funny.'
The film's promoters are no doubt happy about the turnout - and the added publicity generated by a zealous fan.
