Vibes

The vibe: getting to this alfresco bar involves navigating through the hotel but when you reach it, the secluded courtyard with comfortable lounge chairs and trees decorated with white lights is a relaxing setting. The tone of the place is lowered a little by the somewhat tacky, colour-changing light cubes. The main customers seemed to be moneyed youngsters.

The drinks: the cocktail selection was a little sparse, but the drinks were well mixed, with a good balance of flavours. There were Vibes variations on the classics, as well as a signature collection. My cocktail, the Mira Ti'Punch (HK$90), was excessively sour, but when I returned it, I was given another choice - the far sweeter T'as le Look Coco (HK$90). My friend's Cosmo Vibes (HK$118) was delicately fragranced with jasmine, and the S&M (scotch and mint) (HK$90) was a smoky drink with a lemony bite (we asked for it without sugar). The drinks list had choice whiskies and some unusual inclusions, such as Shanghai White Premium Chinese Vodka (HK$95). Standing out among the rums was the delicious, 23-year-old Guatemalan Ron Zacapa Centenario (HK$120); and the beer list included Boddingtons Ale (HK$60). There is also a shisha menu (HK$160) and a cigar selection.

The verdict: the service was slow, but the staff were pleasant and accommodating. The Egyptian man in traditional garb in charge of the shisha, twirling his burning coals and attending to the pipes, was a nice touch. This well-sheltered, quiet space is a good place to unwind in style.
