Many businessmen will say that China is the future given the business opportunities there, but the mainland's tax, legal and accounting systems are very different from those of Hong Kong, and anybody who wants to venture north needs to learn the inner workings to succeed.
HKU SPACE's executive diploma in China business focusing on taxation, law and accounting technologies aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to do business in China.
'The course takes a practical approach. There is the study of real-life cases for students to experience the challenges they may encounter in daily business operations [there],' says programme director Olivia Lui.
'The course is aimed at business owners, management personnel at various levels, lawyers and accountants who have business ties on the mainland,' she adds. 'Students will learn about contract laws and the tax system. The materials will be in Chinese and the lectures will be conducted in Mandarin or Cantonese.'
The course is divided into three cores - mainland tax law, information technology in accounting and economic law. Each consists of 30 hours of lectures. Lessons take three to six months to complete, and there are two intakes - in February and in August. Course lectures are held on weekday evenings or on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
The programme is suitable for management and professionals who are involved in China trade. Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree from a recognised university.
Associate degree or higher diploma holders with at least two years of related work experience will also be considered for places.
