Canto-pop stars turn out in force to collect their music gongs at social media awards ceremony

A-list pop stars certainly don't underestimate the power of social media. That might explain why the music awards ceremony organised by internet portal Sina.com and held on Tuesday attracted as many Canto-pop headliners as any major awards presentation.

The event, held at Kitec in Kowloon Bay, was broadcast live on the internet to fans in Hong Kong, Taiwan and the mainland.

Of the 52 music awards, 16 winners were selected by more than two million Hong Kong Sina Weibo users. The microblogging service's users were also able to interact with their idols, whose Weibo pages were displayed on a screen on the stage.

With almost 7.5 million fans on Weibo, Charlene Choi Cheuk-yin of pop duo Twins bagged the most popular singer award.

Canto-pop king Eason Chan Yik-shun was the biggest winner of the night. He walked away with four awards including best album and most popular Chinese male singer. Singer-songwriter Khalil Fong Dai-tong was second with three awards.
