Original acoustic local vibes

Band Name: 9 Maps
Band members: Sherin Siew (vocals, keyboard, guitar), Ciosa Houlihan (vocals, guitar, ukulele), Gabe Andre (drums)
Based in: Hong Kong

Sherin: We started our musical journey when ... we played together back in high school in a band or two.

Ciosa: We [weren't used to playing] music like this.

Sherin: We played Michelle Branch and some really emo songs.

Sherin: What happened after we left school was ... one of our friends passed away. So we both wrote songs for her, like a eulogy. After a while, I was listening to my iPod on shuffle and this song came up. We decided to pick it up again. We were aiming for the Tom Lee competition and we came second. Then we thought we might be able to get something bigger out of this. We just continue what we are doing without any regards for an angle. This is more for the process, I guess.

Ciosa: We played acoustic because ... you can play it anywhere.

Sherin: You don't need a proper set-up. We were students. So money is an issue. If we have plenty of money floating around, we'll probably buy a recording studio or an orchestra. For acoustic, you can buy a really cheap guitar and play it immediately.

Ciosa: We won't stick to acoustic forever because ... we would like to evolve.

Sherin: We would like to experiment more. But at this stage, acoustic is closer to our vibe and composition.

Gabe: I got inspired by music that ... can raise goosebumps, and music that you feel you can be convinced by the artists and what they are trying to say. You just believe they are playing and singing from their hearts. That's what it takes really.

Sherin: I like singer-songwriters who can sing and write really good lyrics. Poetic lyrics that can make you think in a different way.

Ciosa: The challenge of playing music in Hong Kong is ... find a new venue of music to play at.

Sherin: Also, find the crowd. I think the vast majority of Hong Kong is not interested in indie and original live music. We are trying to get it off the ground but I think the quality of music in Hong Kong is still nowhere near our peers like Singapore and Jakarta. And practice rooms are really expensive as well.

Sherin: The best gig that we've ever played... was in Jakarta at the Tikinli cafe. In Jakarta, a lot more venues are more accustomed to live bands. Also, the sound was crisp and amazing. We could hear ourselves and we really got lost. At least I did.

Gabe: Everyone was really friendly and inviting. You got a real sense that they all loved music.

Sherin: There were people sketching [for free] while we were playing. They were part of a group called Indonesian Caricature. They went round sketching people and uploaded them [the sketches] onto a website out of pure passion.

Sherin: The biggest gig is ... probably at Kitec when we played at Lenka's concert.
