by Kathy Reichs
Seizure is the second instalment of Kathy Reichs' series for young adults. In part one, Virals, a band of teens and tweens (think the Famous Five with, like, cellphones and one fewer member) wound up on a strange island that housed a top secret research laboratory. Our heroine, Tory Brennan, moved to live on the island with her scientist father, Kit. She met soulmates Ben, Hi and Shelton, investigated a mystery and became infected by whatever potion her father was helping to make. In Seizure, Kit leaves North Carolina: times are hard, and no one wants highly confidential experiments anymore. This is the least of Tory's problems. Her new stepmother wants her (gasp) to come out as a debutante in Charleston. For tomboy Tory this is a fate worse than having your DNA fundamentally altered by your father's Promethean mad hubris. It's not long before the quartet are off on a new mission - in search of treasure plundered by the celebrated pirate Anne Bonny. Only, they are not alone. Seizure rips along in the most pleasant and exciting fashion. Reichs knows how to spin a yarn, and this one is well and truly spun.
