Shoppers in the know would have noticed that Sheung Wan's Gough Street area is becoming increasingly hip.

The neighbourhood - already popular for gourmets waiting in queues in front of Kau Kee Restaurant for its signature beef brisket noodles - has now become home to a handful of designer boutiques, cafes and bars.

Singaporean businessman Jansen Ang's Kisses Cupcakes shop is one of the new additions to the neighbourhood.

Ang first tried the brand's cupcakes while travelling in New York and decided to bring it to Asia.

'I don't really have a sweet tooth, but for the business I tried a lot of cupcakes. I want it to be not too sweet, with moist cake - as well as warm and soft buttercream on top,' said Ang at a cake-tasting last Friday.

Instead of his home base, he chose to start the business in Hong Kong.

'I love the demographic here. It's a mixed crowd of locals and expats,' he said. 'And the neighbourhood is great. Agnes b caf? and Ms B's Cakery both opened nearby.'

Business has been picking up since the shop opened three weeks ago.

'We've been lucky and almost every day we've sold out all the 300 to 400 cupcakes, if not we'd give it away to staff in Kau Kee or our other neighbours,' he said.
