Rubbish fee under review

The public will get to weigh in on a planned fee for rubbish disposal, when a consultation paper comes out for review this week.

In the paper, the government will explain how the fee for collecting and getting rid of rubbish would work. It is the latest plan to try to get residents to reduce waste. How much will be charged is uncertain.

'The issue goes well beyond how much will be charged,' a source said. 'It is also about overhauling the way people handle their household waste.'

The city dumps an average of 3.3million tonnes of solid waste in landfills every year - one-third of the rubbish, or 3,000 tonnes a day, is kitchen and food waste.

Currently, the public does not pay directly for dumped rubbish. The government pays the expense, about HK$1.8billion per year.
