The interactive environment  of  the CPA Australia Career Expo is just one of the attractions for aspiring accountants, according to RSM Nelson Wheeler, a CPA firm that offers a range of services to local and international clients.
'The expo is an event where we  directly meet with job candidates, and they can  comfortably  ask questions about the things they would like,'  says Ronald Yam, FCPA (Aust.), a partner at RSM Nelson Wheeler. 
Despite the wide choice of specialisations within the accounting industry for young career-focused professionals,  Yam suggests accounting graduates should first try the auditing profession. 
'Auditing offers exposure to different  businesses and industries within a short period,' says Yam. 
In addition,  Yam says that as an auditor, the young professional benefits from exposure to senior management at a very early stage.  
'The training in a professional audit firm like ours is practical and comprehensive,' he says. 'For instance, our firm has an objective to train our staff so they become all-round CPAs.'  
Yam says the expo also provides RSM Nelson Wheeler with the opportunity to explain the attitude and mindset it seeks in a job applicant. 
For example, the company favours responsible, honest types with strong work ethos and good communication skills.  
Candidates should be eager to improve their knowledge and skills through training, education programmes and self study.  
The firm provides in-house training and mentoring programmes.   
'We encourage our staff to learn and share experiences. We also ensure that their mentor and partners support them,' says Yam.
