Interest and passion are two of the qualities KPMG management and human resources professionals are seeking in potential recruits at the CPA Australia Career Expo.

'We would like to see visitors to the expo make the most of their time by asking relevant questions which show a passion for the industry,' says Margaret So, director, recruitment and resourcing, human resources, KPMG China.

So says participants could consider asking about KPMG's business practices or training and advancement opportunities, rather than merely asking when they should submit a job application.

She says that even among the Big Four firms, there are differences, as well as the anticipated similarities.

'Spending a little time finding out what the differentials are can be valuable, as young people prepare for their professional lives,' says So. 'The informal environment is an ideal platform to ask questions about topics that aren't found on a firm's website.'

At the same time, KPMG can explain how candidates can expand their horizons through their mentoring and talent advancement programmes.

So says that as KPMG continues to grow its headcount in Greater China, including the recruitment of several hundred fresh graduates from Hong Kong, the company has taken into account the career needs and aspirations of a new generation of accountants.

Initiatives include ongoing job challenges and opportunities for development, such as overseas placements as well as regular feedback and performance recognition, and programmes to do with work-life balance.

Acknowledging the aptitude of youngsters for social media, the firm has introduced social networking platforms to provide them with interactive communication channels.

As part of KPMG's personal enhancement programmes, it also organises sports, healthcare and wine-appreciation activities.
