Planning for the future, but unsure about which career path to take? Not surprising, given the many crossroads and steps along the way.

Nelson Hon, CPA (Aust.), a young CPA Australia member, says he was motivated to join the accounting profession due to the array of career options it offers.

'I consider accounting to be a very useful stepping stone, no matter which industry I might join later - at management level or in starting my own business,' says Hon, an assistant manager with KPMG Hong Kong in the China corporate tax department.

He adds that accounting is essential to the operations of any industry.

A graduate of the University of New South Wales, Hon also believes that in addition to the CPA Program being timely and relevant, it also helps young accountants to better apply the principles of accounting.

'CPA Australia is a good way to learn how accounting relates to all areas of business,' says Hon. 'It certainly helps young, curious accountants.'

Hon says that, by organising various functions and activities, CPA Australia provides a valuable networking platform, and that people who attend CPA Australia events are very sociable.

'Senior members are happy to share their knowledge and experiences,' he says. 'They are willing to provide tips and advice on how to take advantage of opportunities to advance yourself.'

This view is shared by Doris Luk Chi-ling, CPA (Aust.), an audit manager with chartered accountants firm S K Luk & Co.

'During my university days as an accounting student, my interest in becoming a CPA was intensified when I realised that accounting could be used to allocate scarce resources, and that it was also a useful tool in decision making,' she says.

Luk adds that having a CPA Australia qualification means having a recognised level of accounting and business knowledge.

'CPA Australia also provides continuous professional development courses to help members to stay up-to-date with the latest business trends and accounting practices,' she says.

Luk adds that these are useful in her daily work, and that she has become more confident and competent after joining CPA Australia.

Noting that life as an accountant can be demanding, Luk says she considers the challenges that she encounters as motivation.

'I approach my work with commitment. I also jog as a hobby, and I love how it teaches you to focus and to be determined to cross the finish line. I am passionate about all I do,' she says.
